![]() ![]() Built into the EDC system is an engine monitoring capability which alerts the operator in the event of a malfunction. Conventional push-pull control cables are eliminated by a fully electronic gear shift and throttle remote control. ![]() Improved engine acceleration, lower and more stable idling and lower smoke and exhaust emissions are some of the benefits claimed by the system. It uses a mechanical fuel injection pump that is electronically regulated, reacting to various parameters fed from sensors. Volvo's EDC, Electronic Diesel Control system was introduced in 1996, and was specially developed as a marine system. Its weight to power ratio of 2.98 kg/kW places it as one of the heavier engines in its class as shown in fig 1. This rating includes light planing vessels in commercial use, patrol and rescue craft. Now an electronic regulated model has been introduced as the TAMD 122P EDC with a Special Light Duty Commercial rating of 455 kW (618 PS) at 2,250. Volvo Penta currently has a broad engine program in which considerable progress has been made in reducing exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and engine noise. The TAMD 122 engine with standard fuel injection pump has been around for several years, and last year an uprated TAMD 122P version developing 441 kW (600 PS) at 2,250 rpm was announced. Bore and stroke are 130 x 150 mm and uses a in-line six cylinder configuration, giving a total displacement of 12 ltrs. The four stroke direct injected diesel engine is turbocharged and intercooled. Volvo Penta are introducing for model year 1997 a new electronic regulated model in the 450 kW class designated TAMD 122P EDC. ![]()
